Winter Backpacking Weekend Great Langdale, Lake District

A winter outdoor experience to remember, backpacking from either Coniston or Grasmere to Great Langdale and back.
Head to the hills for our fantastic guided Winter Backpacking weekend. Spend two days back-packing across the hills and fells of the Lake District, and then camp overnight at the National Trust’s Great Langdale campsite (with great facilities).
Experience the freedom of the fells on our 2-day winter backpacking weekend in the Lake District, walking between Coniston OR Grasmere and Great Langdale.
We’ll meet at either Coniston or Grasmere on the first morning to discuss the trip then spend the day walking across dales, fells and mountains to Great Langdale, where we’ll spend the evening enjoying a meal and local ales beside a roaring fire at the Old Dungeon Ghyll pub, before camping overnight at the campsite. The next morning we’ll walk back over the hills and fells.

CAMPING – GREAT LANGDALE CAMPSITE
We’ll be camping at the National Trust’s Great Langdale campsite
This campsite has a spectacular location at the foot of the Langdale Pikes, and has great facilities, including…
- Campsite shop, which sells provisions including breakfast
- Hot and powerful free showers
- Drying rooms for wet kit
- 5-minute walk from the Old Dungeon Ghyll pub
Most of your camping kit will be waiting at the campsite for you….
- Backpacking tent
- Stove and gas
If you wish to stay at the pub, then that is fine – camping is not compulsory!
- 3-season sleeping bag (minimum comfort rating of 0 degrees C)
- Walking boots and waterproofs
- Food – packed lunch & breakfast; evening meal (pub).
- Personal walking clothing and equipment (base layers etc)
We will walk approximately 10 miles each day, with hills, fells and mountains along the way. The precise route will be determined on the day, given weather conditions, pace of the group etc. The following routes are only suggestions, and may change on the day.
10am – Meet at either Coniston or Grasmere to discuss the walks and gear check.
11am – Set off on our walk across dales, fells and mountains, taking in fascinating history, beautiful views and wonderful landscapes. From Coniston, our route may include Coppermines Valley, Levers Water, Swirl How, Wet Side Edge, Three Shires Stone, Red Tarn, Oxendale and Great Langdale. From Grasmere, our route may include Easedale Tarn, Blea Rigg, Pavey Ark, Langdale Pikes and Stickle Tarn.
5pm – Arrive at Great Langdale and set up camp
7pm – Head to the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel for a meal beside the fire
9am – Continue walk across the dales and fells, walking back to either Coniston or Grasmere. Our route to Coniston may include Side Pike, Lingmoor Fell, Little Langdale, Cathedral Quarry, Tilberthwaite and Hole Rake, whilst our route to Grasmere may include Elterwater, Silver How and Loughrigg Fell.
4pm – Finish back to Coniston or Grasmere for a debrief, then head home.

YOUR GUIDE - MARK REID
MARK REID is the author of 17 walking guidebooks including ‘The Inn Way’ series. He is a qualified Walking Group Leader, Hill & Moorland Leader and Mountain Leader, and has an unrivalled knowledge of the history and geography of the North of England. Mark has a BA (Hons) Geography degree from the University of Lancaster and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS). Mark has walked over 25,000 miles of footpaths since 1997, and has taken over 14,000 people out walking in the countryside – he’s been an Outdoor Professional for 25 years! Mark has appeared on ITV YORKSHIRE on the TV walks series ‘A Breath of Fresh Air’ along with ITV weatherman Jon Mitchell, as well as ITV1’s The Dales.

FITNESS, EXPERIENCE, INFORMATION ETC
- This 2-day backpacking expedition will take you up onto remote fells, hills and mountains of the Lake District, with the potential for adverse weather. The walks will include uneven ground, rough and rocky terrain, stream crossings as well as a number of steep ascents & descents.
- Camping: We will be camping overnight at the National Trust’s Great Langdale campsite in winter. Some of your camping equipment will be set up at the campsite for you, so you don’t have to carry it (sleepmat, stove) – if you provide your own camping equipment then you will need to carry this in your rucksack. You will need to carry your own sleeping bag and tent.
- A good level of fitness is required as you will be walking across hills and fells carrying a rucksack with your some of your overnight gear, equipment and some food (approx. 8kg).
- We will walk about 16 km (10 miles) per day, although this will vary with each expedition according to weather condtiions.
- There will be rest stops throughout the day, as well as 30-mins for lunch.
- Winter weather – the walks will NOT require the use of specialist winter equipment (ice axe, crampons etc), however, we may encounter winter weather conditions whilst on the walks (cold, wind, rain etc); the precise routes will be determined on the day given the weather conditions. This trip will not take place if extreme winter weather is forecast or prevailing; if this happens then you will be transferred onto one of our summer wild camping trips. If there is snow, then we will walk below the ‘snow line’.
- Mark Reid is an experienced Mountain Leader. Mark has walked over 24,000 miles of footpaths throughout the North of England over the last decade and knows the British mountains well. Since 2007, we have taken over 13,000 people out walking in the hills
- Part of the attraction of valley, hill and mountain walking is the challenge of tackling different terrains, landscapes and weather conditions. Every effort is made to minimize potential hazards; however, the very nature of hill and mountain walking involves a certain level of unavoidable risk of accident and/or injury. By taking part in this activity, you are aware of and accept these risks.
- Our walks are suitable for all ages. Under 18s (minimum age 14) may attend if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The child must be accompanied at all times during the walk by their parent/legal guardian.
