Wellbeing Walks in the Yorkshire Dales

We all know that going for a walk in beautiful countryside makes us feel good. But why does it make us feel good?
Research shows that we have an innate affinity with nature and a need to be connected with it. Walking in the countryside can have positive effects on our psychological well-being.
During our Wellbeing Walks we will explore…
- What is well-being, and can it be measured?
- Our innate connection with the natural world
- How can we experience the outdoors in different ways
- Outdoor experiences and memories that last beyond the walk
- Working towards physical, mental and social well-being
During the day, we will immerse ourselves in the ‘green therapy’ of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, where we’ll look at different ways to engage with our natural environment (biophilia, eco-therapy and natural thinking), take part in some Sense Walking, look at the use of Journey Sticks as part of natural navigation and explore how the outdoors has inspired some of our greatest artists and writers, and how it can inspire us through poetry and artwork.
From the layers of human history to the geology of the rocks, we will also explore the natural environment to enhance your experience.
OUTLINE OF THE DAY
Meet at the centre of Settle – introductions and overview of the day.
10am – 4pm
Fully guided Well-being Walk in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, taking in waterfalls, caves, woodland and fantastic views.
Return to Settle and collect our thoughts about the day
8 miles (13 km)
From Settle, we’ll follow paths, tracks and lanes to Scaleber Force waterfall, then head across limestone pastures and hills to the scheduled ancient monuments of Victoria Cave and Jubilee Cave before passing glacial erratics of Winskill Stones to reach Catrigg Force waterfall. The return legs follows field paths and tracks to Langcliffe and back to Settle. Packed lunch en route.
MARK REID is the author of 17 walking guidebooks including ‘The Inn Way’ series. He is a qualified Walking Group Leader, Hill & Moorland Leader and Mountain Leader, and has an unrivalled knowledge of the history and geography of the North of England. Mark has a BA (Hons) Geography degree from the University of Lancaster and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS). Mark Reid has walked over 22,500 miles of footpaths over the past 23 years, and has taken over 12,000 people out walking in the countryside. Mark has appeared on ITV YORKSHIRE on the TV walks series ‘A Breath of Fresh Air’ along with ITV weatherman Jon Mitchell, as well as ITV1’s The Dales.
EXPERIENCE, FITNESS & INFORMATION
- No previous hill-walking experience is required as full guidance will be given.
- A reasonable level of fitness and stamina will be required, as the natural environment can be demanding at times
- We are fully insured (public, civil & professional indemnity insurance)
- All of our instructors are fully qualified and experienced Mountain Leaders
- So far, we have taken over 12,000 people out walking, and have a wealth of experience dealing with all ages and abilities.
- Part of the attraction of valley, hill and mountain walking is the challenge of tackling different terrains, landscapes and weather conditions. Every effort is made to minimize potential hazards; however, the very nature of hill and mountain walking involves a certain level of unavoidable risk of accident and/or injury. By taking part in this activity, you are aware of and accept these risks.
- Our walks are suitable for all ages. Under 18s (minimum age 14) may attend if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The child must be accompanied at all times during the walk by their parent/legal guardian.
