Join us for our Peak District Walking Weekend in the beautiful green valley of Edale, with the gritstone tors and heather moorland of Kinder Scout rising up to the north and the Great Ridge and Mam Tor hemming in the valley to the south. Enjoy a wonderful weekend of adventures, shared experiences and new friendships.

The valley of Edale is hemmed in by hills and moorland, and was once known as the ‘island valley’; for centuries it was virtually cut off from the outside world until the railway arrived in the late 19th Century. Along the valley floor are five clusters of farms known locally as booths although the largest of these, Grindsbrook Booth, is more commonly known as Edale. The word ‘booth’ is derived from the old Scandinavian word for a shepherd’s shelter. For such a small place Edale has a big reputation, known throughout the country for one thing – walking! There are beautiful sylvan valley routes, challenging moorland hikes, amazing gritstone outcrops, lovely ridge walks plus much more.

The Old Nag’s Head is situated at the heart of Edale, a famous 16th Century inn that marks the start of the Pennine Way.

Mark Reid has written a number of walking guidebooks about the Peak District, including The Inn Way… to the Peak District, and so knows the surrounding hills and dales extremely well.

Weekend Walks

There will be a choice of adventurous and leisurely guided walks on Saturday and Sunday, with Mark Reid and one of his colleagues (who have exceptional local knowledge). The precise routes will be determined just before the weekend, taking into consideration weather conditions etc. You will be able to sign up for your chosen walk at the Friday evening ‘icebreaker’, where you will also be able to discuss the walks with Mark Reid.

Saturday (9:30am) – choice of adventurous or leisurely walks, with routes through Edale and the surrounding hills, including Kinder Scout and the Great Ridge – superb walks full of interest, history, variety and great views. Return back to the pub late afternoon to recount your day’s adventures.

Sunday (10am) – choice of adventurous or leisurely walks taking in more of Edale and its surroundings. Return back to the pub mid afternoon before bidding fond farewells… until the next Walking Weekend!

Choice of walks: We usually offer a choice of adventurous or leisurely walks on both days. Saturday is a ‘full day’ from 9:30am until 5pm, whilst Sunday is a ‘half day’ from 10am until around 3pm. The choice of walks is dependent upon there being more than 10 participants taking part in the weekend; if there are less than 10 participants then there will be one walk per day. All distances & timings are approximate. The precise routes will be determined on the day, taking into consideration weather conditions etc. 

Evening entertainment

Friday evening (8pm) – Meet at the Old Nag’s Head for our ‘icebreaker’ pub evening, where you can relax, socialise and meet your fellow walkers, choose your level of walk for Saturday and Sunday.

Arriving early on Friday? Your guides will be eating at the pub at 7:30pm on Friday evening – you are most welcome to join us for a meal; just let us know so we can add you to our table.

Saturday evening (7:30pm) – Meal at the Old Nag’s Head, followed by a fantastic Pub Quiz Night with Mark Reid as your quizmaster! Prizes for the winning team. (Meals are not included in the price).

How to get to Edale
From the A6187 at Hope, a minor road head north-westwards into Edale in the heart of the Peak District National Park. There is a train station at Edale on the Sheffield to Manchester line.

Facilities
Edale has two pubs, B&Bs, self catering accommodation, campsite, Youth Hostel, general stores and cafes.
