The Swaledale Swagger is a NEW Yorkshire Dales Challenge Walk, that traces a high-level route around the hills and moors above Swaledale and Arkengarthdale.
The walk starts and finishes in the lovely village of Reeth, and takes in some of the very best viewpoints in Swaledale.

THE SWALEDALE SWAGGER
The Swaledale Swagger is a 20 mile route with 975m of climbing that will take around 10 hours to complete. Essentially, the route follows the moors and hills above the confluence of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, including…
1. Fremington Edge Trig Point (430m)
2. Great Pinseat Trig Point (583m)
3. Calver Hill (487m)

THE ROUTE
From Reeth, we head eastwards to the historic Marrick Priory from where the famous Nuns’ Steps take us up onto Fremington Edge, and some of the finest views in the Yorkshire Dales across the sweeping valleys of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale. We follow the crest of this dramatic escarpment all the way to Fell End Lead Mines, where we drop down through old mine workings to reach Arkle Town. We then continue westwards up onto vast moorlands to reach the Trig Point on Great Pinseat (583m), before following an old miners’ track down to the fascinating ruins of Old Gang Smelting Mills and then Surrender Bridge Smelting Mill. The final leg of this walk climbs up onto Calver Hill, with far-reaching views across Swaledale, before dropping down back into Reeth.
It is a demanding walk that requires a good level of fitness and so must be approached with preparation and training, but it is also a rewarding walk that will be remembered for many years for its variety of incredible views, amazing landscapes and diverse terrain. The walk mostly follows good paths and tracks across farmland, hills and moorland, with some rougher terrain through the old lead mines and across some of the hills.
This is a beautiful, wild and remote challenge walk, away from the crowds.
