Team Walking - Guided corporate walks by Mark Reid, author of The Inn Way series of walking guidebooks

Team Building

Adventurous hill-walking experiences that will inspire and motivate your team.

Do you need to bring your team together? - we can help you!

Teamwork can significantly improve organisational performance. Organisations and companies with effective teams boast some of the highest levels of quality, consistency and output.

TeamWalking can benefit your company by providing a range of unique, effective and powerful team building experiences that utilise the power of the natural environment to facilitate learning, empathy, communication, understanding, inter-dependence, growth and development. Our adventurous hill-walking experiences will help improve communications and engender team spirit, which will make your team work more effectively.

There are two rules for all of our team building experiences.
No.1 – no mobile phones. It is important to disconnect from the pressures of everyday life.
No.2 – find out one positive thing about everyone else during the walk, which will then be shared at the end of the day.

OUR Team Building experiences:

Choose from the following three activities...

1. COMPASS NAVIGATION SKILLS
We teach the skills needed to successfully navigate your team across challenging terrain, relying on map and compass skills to find your way across the high fells and heather moors. Shadowed at all times by Mark Reid (Walk Leader), the team then put these new-found skills into practice with each person taking it in turns to navigate their team across challenging terrain, competing against each other to become the best ‘hill-walking navigator’. Full day.
BENEFITS: Improve confidence, learn new skills, encourage inter-dependence, engender team spirit and bonding. Feel relaxed, invigorated and calm. Use the psychological benefits of hill-walking to assist communication, empathy and understanding between the team members, and also regain perspective and develop new vision on a personal level.

2. NIGHT NAVIGATION CHALLENGE
This really does take you out of your comfort zone – high on the moors, miles from anywhere with only a map, compass and head-torch to find your way off the hills. And with visibility of less than 20 metres, you are reliant on pacing and bearings. Again, we will teach the skills needed to successfully navigate your team across the fells and moors during daylight hours, then head back up to the hills at night where these new-found skills will be put into practice with each person taking it in turns to navigate their team through the inky darkness, competing against each other to become the best ‘night-time navigator’. Full day, into the evening.
BENEFITS: As above, but much more challenging. An experience to remember!

3. ADVENTUROUS HILL-WALKING EXPERIENCE
An adventurous and enjoyable day’s exploration of the hills and valleys where success and achievement is gained through shared experiences. Full day or half day - 'night journey' also available.
BENEFITS: The key focus is to use the psychological benefits of hill-walking to assist communication, empathy and understanding between the team members, and also regain perspective and develop new vision on a personal level.

Post-walk de-brief
All walks will finish at a great country pub for a de-brief session where we will discuss what people have learnt about themselves, explore their differing experiences and share the positive things they have found out about each other.

Walk Leader
All participants will be guided or shadowed at all times by Mark Reid (Walking Group Leader), who has an unrivalled knowledge of the history and geography of the North of England. Using his knowledge and experience, he will bring alive the landscape through the interpretation of local history, geology and geography. Mark Reid has walked over 7,500 miles of footpaths over the last decade – you are GUARANTEED not to get lost!

Experience, fitness and gear:

EXPERIENCE
No experience required. Full training and guidance will be given. All participants will be guided or shadowed at all times.

FITNESS
All walks are tailored specifically for each individual group according to your needs, aspirations, experience and average fitness levels. However, a basic level of fitness is required as hill-walking can be demanding at times, with steep ground and rough terrain in places. There are always plenty of rest stops throughout the day and the walks are carefully planned to maximise the full potential of the landscape, taking into account ascents and descents.

GEAR
We can provide full BERGHAUS walking gear, including waterproof jackets, trousers, fleeces, rucksacks, gloves and hats – FREE OF CHARGE! We will also provide everyone with an OS map, compass, head-torch, pedometer and high visibility armband. NB: You must provide your own walking boots.

The psychology of hill-walking – eco-therapy

The rolling hills and sweeping valleys engender a sense of space and freedom that has a unique power to soothe, calm, inspire and refresh. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that the great outdoors can have positive effects on our psychological well-being, not to mention the associated physical health benefits. Hill-walking has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, improve self esteem and boost self confidence. Hill-walking is a multi-sensory and stimulating experience that clears your mind and allows escapism from the everyday. It provokes thought, reflection and contemplation; it allows time to talk to others in the group in a relaxed and sociable manner. Research shows that human beings have an innate affinity with nature and a need to be connected with it,
