"I really learnt some useful things to add to my map and compass skills. I am looking forward to practising them now! The small group size made the learning more meaningful. There was plenty of opportunity for individual questions. Also there was minimum "classroom" and maximum "on the hillside" practical experience." L. Edwards, Navigation Skills weekend, March 2009

"I thoroughly enjoyed the course and gained a great deal from it. Any objectives I had were easily surpassed. Your knowledge of the area allied to your mapwork skill made it a highly enjoyable and productive weekend. The style of delivery was very friendly but with a cutting edge ('Show me where we are?'/ 'How do you know?')" A. Bryan, Navigation Skills weekend, April 2009

Do you want to...?

  • Learn new walking / outdoor skills
  • Feel more confident in the outdoors
  • Plan your own walks
  • Learn how to use a compass

Whether you are a novice or experienced walker, these courses will give you the skills you need to explore further and enhance your enjoyment of the countryside.

The courses are practically based, with two full day's walking in the Yorkshire Dales coupled with navigation training within a small group.

OUR NAVIGATION COURSES COVER:

MAP SKILLS – Map interpretation, features and symbols, contours and slopes, route planning, safe routes (avoiding hazards) and grid references.

NAVIGATION SKILLS – Compass work, navigation features, pacing, timings, route legs. NNAS Silver level covers compass work in greater detail.

SAFETY ON THE HILLS – Weather and daylight, essential clothing and gear, emergency procedures, basic first aid kit, lost or mis-placed.

ACCESS – Where can you walk, access rights and responsibilities, access issues, Countryside Code.

The walks will begin on Saturday and Sunday at 9am with a complimentary coffee whilst we discuss the day ahead and finish at around 5pm. Navigation training will take place on Saturday. There will be a route plan to complete on Saturday evening ready for Sunday's walk (Bronze level) or night navigation on Saturday evening (Silver level). Each person will navigate a leg of Sunday's walk, under supervision. On Saturday evening, we will also meet up for a meal together at a local pub.

Upon completion of the NNAS Bronze award, you will be able to plan and follow your own walks in the countryside.

Upon completion of the NNAS Silver award, you will be able to plan and follow walks in the countryside away from paths and tracks.

You will also receive a NNAS Bronze or Silver Level certificate and fabric badge.
