MAP READING COURSES

1-day course ideal for beginners
If you use walking guidebooks, follow others or are just starting out walking in the countryside, then our 1-day Map Reading course is the ideal course for you. This course covers all of the key topics, from weather forecasts to using a compass, to get you on the right path to enjoy the countryside. We cover around 6 miles over the day, following paths across valleys and lower hills. These courses are based from great pubs in the Yorkshire Dales, from 9am to 5pm.

NNAS BRONZE AWARD

2-day course ideal for beginners
No experience is necessary for the NNAS Bronze award. From novice walkers to experienced hill-walkers who wish to 'fill the gaps', this course is the ideal choice for people who wish to learn the foundations of good navigation in the countryside. With 2 days to learn, practice and consolidate, our NNAS Bronze courses simply have twice the time to learn new skills compared to our 1-day Map Reading course. We cover the same topics as our 1-day Map Reading course, but in much more detail. These courses are your passport to freedom on the hills. We cover 6 - 8 miles each day, and keep to the dales, lower hills and some moorland using paths, tracks and Rights of Way. These courses are based from great pubs in the Yorkshire Dales, and run from 9am to 5pm each day, with an evening route planning session at the pub. These courses are accredited to NNAS and you gain an award upon successful completion.

NNAS 'STRAIGHT TO SILVER AWARD

3-day course suitable for experienced walkers who want to develop their skills
This award combines the Bronze and Silver Awards into an intensive 3 day course. We cover the NNAS Bronze syllabus on the first day (see above), then move onto the NNAS Silver Syllabus on the second and third days, learning the skills to navigate across open country away from paths and tracks. This course is ideal if you are an experienced walker and want to develop your skills and confidence further. The course includes the upland environment, route simplification, compass bearings, navigation strategies, relocation in a remote area, dealing with poor visibility, detailed contour interpretation and distance estimation. We cover around 6 - 10 miles each day, and head across valleys, farmland, moors, hills, fells and open country. A reasonable level of fitness is required. These courses are based from great pubs in the Yorkshire Dales, and run from 9am to 5pm each day, with evening sessions at the pub and an evening of night navigation. These courses are accredited to NNAS and you gain an award upon successful completion.

NNAS SILVER AWARD

2-day course for NNAS Bronze award holders
This award builds upon the Bronze Award and gives you the skills to navigate across open country, such as the hills, fells and moors of the Yorkshire Dales. The course includes the upland environment, route simplification, compass bearings, navigation strategies, relocation in a remote area, dealing with poor visibility, detailed contour interpretation and distance estimation, giving you the skills to plan and follow your own walks across open country. We cover around 6 - 10 miles each day, and head across moors, hills, fells and Open Country.  These courses are based from great pubs in the Yorkshire Dales, and run from 9am to 5pm each day, with an evening session at the pub and some night navigation. These courses are accredited to NNAS and you gain an award upon successful completion.

NNAS GOLD AWARD

2-day training course for NNAS Silver award holders
This advanced award gives you the skills needed to navigate across any area of open country including mountainous terrain in areas such as the Yorkshire Dales or Lake District. This course includes complex contour features, detailed compass work, dealing with poor visibility, route planning on the hill, continuous location, appropriate navigational strategies, developing the skills required to plan and follow safe routes away from paths and tracks in any area of open country. A good level of fitness is required. These courses are based from great pubs in the Yorkshire Dales, and run from 9am to 6pm each day, with an evening session at the pub and some night navigation. The Assessment takes place on a separate day after a period of consolidation. These courses are accredited to NNAS and you gain an award upon successful completion.

MOUNTAIN SKILLS

2-day course for experienced walkers who want to move their walking from hills to mountains.
An interest in and some experience of summer hill-walking is required for this Mountain Skills course. Preferably, you will have already attended a navigation skills course, such as a Map Reading course or NNAS Bronze award, have experience walking in hill country such as the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors or Peak District, or already enjoy fellwalking in the Lake District and want to improve your skills. You will already be confident navigating with a map following paths. This course teaches the skills required to plan and follow your own walks across the Lakeland mountains, deal with the mountain environment (including steep ground) and look after yourself in the mountains. A good level of fitness is required.These courses are based from great pubs in the Lake District, and run from 9am to 5pm each day, with an evening session at the pub. These courses are accredited to Mountain Training.


OTHER OUTDOOR COURSES


NAVIGATION MASTERCLASS

1-day course for aspiring Mountain Leaders, NNAS Gold award or competent navigators
This 1-day advanced course is ideal for experienced and accomplished hill-walkers and navigators. During the course, we will move progressively into more challenging terrain and conditions, and we will actively seek out poor visibility and complex landform, whilst learning and perfecting the skills required to effectively and efficiently move across the open hills. We will cover around 8 miles over the day. 9am - 5pm.


COMPASS & CONTOURS

1-day course for experienced walkers who wish to develop their skills further.
This course is ideal for experienced hillwalkers who want to relate map contours with landform, slope angle and slope aspect, and tie this in with compass work to allow you to navigate across the hills away from paths using contours as the prime method of navigation. We cover around 8 miles over the day. These courses are based from great pubs in the Yorkshire Dales, from 9am to 5pm.


RELOCATION

1-day course for experienced and accomplished hill-walkers
Ever been lost on the hills? This course will help you develop a set of techniques to help you get back on track. From slope aspect and landform, to position lines and transits, we will look at what information is available around you on the hills... and how to use it effectively. These courses head into remote and challenging terrain, and are based from great pubs in the Yorkshire Dales. 9am to 5pm.


NIGHT NAVIGATION

Evening course for experienced hill-walkers.
Ever got caught in the dark? This evening course will give you the key skills required to navigate in darkness and/or poor visibility. Ideal as a refresher for NNAS Silver award holders or those working towards their NNAS Gold or ML awards, as well as experienced hill-walkers who wish to brush up their skills. These courses are based from great pubs in the Yorkshire Dales, from 6pm to 11pm.
