Activity Day experiences:

Choose from the following activities...

1. NAVIGATION SKILLS
We teach the skills needed to successfully navigate across the hills, dales and moors. Shadowed at all times by Mark Reid (Walk Leader), the team then put these new-found skills into practice with each person taking it in turns to navigate across challenging terrain. Full day.

2. NIGHT NAVIGATION / NIGHT JOURNEY
An experience to remember! This will take you out of your comfort zone – high on the moors, with only a map, compass and head-torch to find your way. Again, we will teach the skills needed to successfully navigate across the fells and moors during daylight hours, then head back up to the hills at night where these new-found skills are put into practice. Our Night Journey includes the full 'night hike' experience, but without the navigation skills. Full day (into the evening).

3. ADVENTUROUS HILL-WALKING EXPERIENCE
An adventurous and enjoyable day’s exploration of the hills and valleys where success and achievement is gained through shared experiences. Full day or half day

4. ULTIMATE PUB WALK EXPERIENCE
Aimed squarely at the corporate entertaining market, Mark Reid has spent almost 20 years writing classic pub walks and knows the paths and pubs of the North of England like the back of his hand. Enjoy a carefully planned walk that takes in the very best landscapes, and round off at a classic country pub or – better still – with a tour of Black Sheep Brewery. Full day or half day.

5. WALKING FOR HEALTH - Staff health & well-being
We discuss the many potential health benefits of walking, provide pedometers for the day and then teach map and navigation skills that can then be built upon, providing skills for life.

6. ENJOYABLE & INFORMATIVE GUIDED WALKS
Spend an enjoyable and inspirational day surrounded by stunning landscapes. Explore the history, heritage, folklore and traditional pubs of the National Parks of Northern England, including the Yorkshire Dales.

7. FOREST ORIENTEERING CHALLENGE
A real team challenge where you have to devise a strategy to visit as many checkpoints as possible within the time available, navigating your way around an orienteering course set in beautiful woodland. Successful completion is reliant upon good teamwork, communication, strategy, planning and problem solving.

Experience, fitness and gear:

EXPERIENCE
No experience required. Full training and guidance will be given. All participants will be guided or shadowed at all times.

FITNESS
All walks are tailored specifically for each individual group according to your needs, aspirations, experience and average fitness levels. However, a basic level of fitness and mobility is required as the natural environment can be demanding at times.

GEAR
We can provide full BERGHAUS walking gear, including waterproof jackets, trousers, fleeces, rucksacks, gloves and hats. We will also provide everyone with an OS map, compass and head-torch.

THE CHALLENGE OF NATURE

Our hill-walking experiences are NON COMPETITIVE. Competition divides and fragments, whilst our experiences bond and unite. It is the terrain, elements, hills and valleys, navigation, self reliance and inter dependence that are the challenges, where achievement is gained through shared experiences.

No artificial tasks, no games, no constructed courses, no gimmicks - what we offer is GENUINE, NATURAL AND REAL

The psychology of hill-walking

The rolling hills and sweeping valleys engender a sense of space and freedom that has a unique power to soothe, calm, inspire and refresh. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that the great outdoors can have positive effects on our psychological well-being, not to mention the associated physical health benefits. Hill-walking has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, improve self esteem and boost self confidence. Hill-walking is a multi-sensory and stimulating experience that clears your mind and allows escapism from the everyday. It provokes thought, reflection and contemplation; it allows time to talk to others in the group in a relaxed and sociable manner. Research shows that human beings have an innate affinity with nature and a need to be connected with it..
